According to some recent research from Boston, HIV has been linked to transmission from pre-chewed foods. They have identified 4 cases where mothers with HIV pre-chewed foods for their non-HIV infected child and with sores in their mouths, they passed on the virus to their young.
The first case mentioned involved a 15 month old child. Between the age of 9 and14 months the infected parent pre-chewed the foods. This was in 1993. Since then there have been 3 more cases in Miami, Carribean, and also in Memphis. In all of the cases, either the caregiver had sores in her mouth or the child was teething with inflamed gums. Researchers have always maintained that HIV can not be passed via saliva and it is believed that the transmission was from blood.
